Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
