A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider security situation underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from transport usage to discussions habits.
