Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
